Speaker Bio

Edward S. Karl, CPA
Vice President – Taxation of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants

Edward S. Karl, CPA, is Vice President - Taxation of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). In this position, he is responsible for the review, formulation, and submission to Congress, the Treasury Department, and the Internal Revenue Service of technical and policy recommendations for improvement of the federal tax process. Mr. Karl serves as a principal liaison for the AICPA with the Internal Revenue Service. He is also responsible for tax ethical issues including management of the AICPA’s tax standards, the Statements on Standards for Tax Services. Finally, Mr. Karl oversees the Tax Division’s delivery of services to members which focuses on helping AICPA members provide the highest quality professional tax services.

Mr. Karl was previously employed in the tax department of a large, national CPA firm as well as a smaller, local one where he established their tax department. He was a frequent contributor to The Certificate, a publication of the Greater Washington Society of CPAs, of which he was an editor for fifteen years. He has also spoken at numerous tax institutes, state CPA society meetings and IRS programs.

Mr. Karl is a member of the AICPA, the American Society of Association Executives, the Maryland Association of CPAs, and the Greater Washington Society of CPAs where he has also served on their Federal Tax Committee and Board of Governors.

Melissa M. Labant
Director – Tax Advocacy & Professional Standards of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants

Melissa Labant is the Director – Tax Advocacy & Professional Standards of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) in Washington, DC.

In this role, she assists in the development and implementation of the AICPA’s tax advocacy strategy which centers on the review, formulation and submission to Congress, the Department of Treasury, and the Internal Revenue Service of technical and policy recommendations. She also plays a key role in the development of AICPA testimony for tax-related Congressional hearings.

Ms. Labant obtained her law degree and B.S. in Business Administration (with an emphasis in accounting) from St. Louis University in St. Louis, Missouri. She is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and has earned the Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) designation from the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards. Ms. Labant has also earned her Personal Financial Specialist (PFS) and Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) designations.

Ms. Labant recently appeared on Fox and Friends, Fox Business, and Al Jazeera America and has been quoted in several business and trade publications, including the Wall Street Journal, Wall Street Journal China, USA Today, NY Times, Chicago Tribune, LA Times, The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, The Huffington Post, among others. Ms. Labant is a frequent speaker at national and state society tax conferences and webcasts.
