Speaker Bio

Jeffrey A. Porter, CPA

Jeffrey A. Porter is the Founder and owner of Porter & Associates, CPA, a local firm in Huntington, West Virginia which concentrates in the providing of tax planning and business advisory services for small to medium sized businesses and high net worth individuals.

Mr. Porter has been active in the AICPA for over twenty-nine years, currently serving on the Board of Directors and its Governing Council, Secretary of the AICPA PAC and Chair of the Tax Reform Task Force. He was previously chair of the Tax Executive Committee. He was the 2016 recipient of the Arthur J. Dixon Memorial Award, the highest honor bestowed by the accounting profession in the area of taxation. On behalf of the AICPA, he has testified before U.S. House of Representatives Subcommittees regarding the "Mobile Workforce State Income Tax Simplification Act of 2011" and "Adding to the Uncertainty: Small Business' Perspectives on the Tax Cliff" and before the U.S. Senate Committee on Finance on "Tax Fraud, Tax ID Theft and Tax Reform: Moving Forward with Solutions." He served on the Steering Committee for the AICPA National Tax Conference for twenty years and served as Chair of the Conference for over ten years. He is also a member of the West Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants.

He was named recipient of the 2017 Marshall University Distinguished Alumnus Award, the Marshall University Alumni Association's highest award.

Mr. Porter is a frequent lecturer and has taught tax-related continuing education for a number of state CPA societies, local and national firms and the AICPA National Tax Conference.

Mr. Porter holds a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from Marshall University and a Masters of Taxation from The University of Tulsa. He currently resides in Huntington, West Virginia where he is actively involved in many community-related activities including: Past member-Board of Governors-Mountwest Community & Technical College; Treasurer of the Huntington Symphony Orchestra; Past Chair of the United Methodist Foundation of WV Board of Trustees; Past President of the Marshall University Alumni Association; Past Chair of the West Virginia Lottery Commission; Past Chair of the West Virginia Volunteers in Mission; and participating in and leading Mission teams to Nicaragua, Russia, Honduras, Dominican Republic, Cuba, Alaska and disaster recovery teams to Mississippi.

Ted Sarenski

Ted created Blue Ocean Strategic Capital, LLC within a regional accounting firm in 1997 and in 2010, purchased 100% ownership from that firm to begin as an independently owned organization. Kevin VandenBerg, who joined Ted in 2007, became a partner at the same time.

Ted’s over 30 years experience as a CPA and over 20 years as a Financial Planner serve as the backdrop for the assembly of the Blue Ocean staff of highly educated, experienced people who form the team that deliver wealth management services to Central New York.  His extensive experience in individual taxation and estate planning bring a dimension to wealth management not found in most other asset management firms at the local level.

Ted is recognized locally and nationally as an expert providing financial planning advice. He currently appears on WSTM-3, Syracuse’s NBC affiliate, taking viewers’ calls and offering planning concepts to viewers and was recently nominated to receive the 2010 Distinguished Service Award by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) Personal Financial Planning Division for contributions to industry-related publications and speaking engagements across the country.

Ted authored articles on financial planning that have appeared in The Journal of Accountancy, The CPA Journal, The Journal of Taxation and the AICPA Wealth Management Insider. He has been interviewed and quoted in many publications including: USA Today, Consumer Reports, The Christian Science Monitor, Investment News, Kiplinger Personal Finance Report, Accounting Today and The Practical Accountant.

Since 2005, Ted has been interviewed by hundreds of Radio Stations across the country on a variety of financial planning and income tax topics. Ted was interviewed for a 45 minute segment of NPR on the topic of retirement and Social Security in 2009.
