Beyond technical or financial knowledge, serving as an effective expert witness requires specific skills that convey confidence, credibility and authority. Learn how to combine these aspects, with a command of the courtroom, during the AICPA Expert Witness Skills Workshop. The workshop sessions go beyond the typical classroom lecture, so you can participate in a real-life courtroom atmosphere. With seating limited to just 18 participants and almost a 1:1 student-to faculty ratio, it’s the ideal environment to practice your presentation and communication skills to experts, lawyers and judges, receive personalized feedback and take those skills to the next level.

PLEASE NOTE: The focus of the workshop is on the practical skills necessary to credibly communicate a professional opinion to a trier of fact. It does not cover the technical aspects of developing a business valuation or an economic damages analysis. The requests for a particular case study will be considered but are not guaranteed.

Students will learn about the deposition phase of a litigation matter, including what is covered in a deposition, how attorneys approach the process, and do’s and don’ts experts should be paying attention to.

Students will break out into their respective groups in which faculty will present a review of big picture issues in each report, including major assumptions as well as strengths and weaknesses. Sample reports from each case will be used by students to “testify” to during the mock trial on Saturday.

4b. Case Study Overview and Expert Reports - Business Valuation

5. Deposition on Qualifications Demonstration

Students will observe a demonstration of an attorney faculty member conducting a “deposition” of an expert witness (an accounting faculty member). During this session, attendees will learn the attorney’s goals for the deposition and how the accountant responds to questioning.

6. Deposition Practice on Qualifications

During this interactive session, students will be briefly “deposed” by an attorney on their actual resumes. Each student will be “deposed” twice, with one session video recorded. Following each deposition, a brief critique will be provided by faculty members. The video recording will be a valuable tool for students to refer to and learn from when they return home.

During this interactive session, faculty members will work with students on direct examination exercises. Each student will “testify” to a part of their chosen case study, followed by critiques given by in-room faculty. The practice session will be video recorded so that the participant can replay their “testimony” in a one-on-one session with another faculty member for an additional critiquing. Students will also gain valuable insight by watching other students practice their role in the case.
