Optional workshops

Session 301: Public Sector Fraud: Prevention and Detection
Speakers: Plant Moran - Eric Conforti, Michele McDermott, & Matthew Bohdan

This session will address recent frauds that have occurred in the public sector, including trends and key risk indicators. Fraud is pervasive and can have severe financial implications, as fraud losses are rarely recovered. Using actual case examples from investigations performed by Plante Moran's forensic accounting team, this interactive session will teach you how to spot red flags indicative of fraud and will address best practices for the design of internal controls to help mitigate the risk of fraud in your entity.

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss current fraud stats and trends (ACFE Report to the Nations), including those specific to governments.
  • Learn how data analytics can detect fraud anomalies more efficiently and what to look for in supporting documentation once anomalies are detected.
  • Discover useful frameworks to aid in the implementation of internal controls and fraud risk practices.
  • Analyze actual documentation from a multitude of case studies involving the following schemes: billing, corruption, payroll, expense reimbursement, check tampering, and more.

Attendees may request Yellow Book credits for this conference.
*Auditors must use professional judgment when determining what subjects and/or sessions qualify for Yellow Book CPE in accordance with the Government Accountability Office, Government Auditing Standards, July 2018 Revision (GAO-18-568G), Chapter 4: Competence and Continuing Professional Education.
