However, more than a decade after the Risk Assessment Standards were issued, the AICPA Peer Review team has found that more than one in 10 firms failed to comply with AU-C Section 315 or 330.

Charles E. Landes

Charles E. Landes is Vice President of Professional Standards and Services at the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA). In this capacity, he oversees the technical activities of the Auditing Standards Board, Accounting and Review Services Committee, Accounting Standards Executive Committee and the PCPS Technical Issues Committee. Team members help committees draft and deliberate authoritative professional standards and interpretations. Team members also develop non-authoritative professional guidance such as Auditing Practice Releases, Professional Issue Task Force Alerts, Technical Practice Aid Q&As and other forms of guidance on emerging issues.

Landes is a former member of the Auditing Standards Board, and is a former chairman of the Peer Review Committee of the Private Companies Practice Section. He also served on the SEC Practice Section peer review committee as well as the AICPA Peer Review Board.

Prior to joining the AICPA as Director,Audit and Attest Standards, Landes served as partner in charge of the accounting and auditing for the Cincinnati firm of Barnes, Denning & Co., Ltd. He began his public accounting experience with Ernst & Whinney, a predecessor firm of Ernest & Young and was also with KMG Main Hurdman. He is a past member of the board of directors of the Ohio Society of CPAs, and is a two-time recipient of the AICPA/Ohio Society Outstanding Discussion Leader Award.

Landes is a graduate of Miami University with a bachelor's degree in accounting and holds an MBA from Bowling Green State University.

Carl Mayes, CPA

Associate Director - CPA Quality and Evolution, Association of International Certified Professional Accountants, Durham, NC

Carl Mayes is the Associate Director of CPA Quality and Evolution. He is the project lead for the AICPA's Enhancing Audit Quality (EAQ) initiative and manages the CPA Evolution effort.

Before working on the EAQ initiative, Carl served on the AICPA Peer Review team and helped develop the AICPA Not-for-Profit Section. Carl is a licensed CPA in North Carolina and worked as an auditor for regional and local public accounting firms before joining the AICPA.
